5 Quick Questions About the Artist behind the Summer Fruits Shopper Bag
1: How do you describe your style of illustration/art?
I like to create thoughtfully detailed work that evokes a strong sense of atmosphere. I’m really interested in observing the world and drawing out the emotions within it – joy, sadness, fear, passion, and everything in between. Through unexpected colour palettes and considered composition, I hope to capture a particular feeling or moment that resonates with the viewer.
2: Where do you find your inspiration?
I draw a lot of inspiration from everyday life. I love observing people out and about, as well as drawing from my relationships, experiences and feelings. Often the smallest moments end up becoming the most interesting ideas.
3: What’s your favourite piece of art that you’ve created?
I have a puzzle coming out soon with Laurence King that I’m really proud of. It’s the second in an Agatha Christie puzzle series, and I was able to take what I learned from the first puzzle and really push the atmosphere and mood in the second. The mystery genre provides such a rich visual and emotional language to work with. The illustration is layered with details, clues and storytelling moments so that every puzzle piece feels distinct.
4: What’s next for Ruby Ash?
Hopefully lots of exciting projects, just like this one! One of the things I love most about illustration is that every project offers an opportunity to learn something new and explore a different subject or story.
5: Finally - what is your favourite summer fruit?
I looove boysenberries. I have really fond memories of going berry picking around Christmas as a kid and eating far too many straight from the bush, usually to the point where I felt sick! They remind me of hot summer days and being outdoors.
